Gargle and spit: mouthwash is easy, right? Think it or not, using mouthwash is a little bit more intricate than that. (But once you get the steps down, it really isn’t tricky at all.) We’ve put together a few instructions to support you in getting the most out of your mouthwash-swishing sessions.

Utilized correctly, mouthwash can be a solid part of any oral hygiene routine. To use mouthwash, dispense about 20 ml of the fluid into a cup. Transfer the liquid from the cup into your mouth and swish, gargle, or hold it in your mouth for around 30 seconds before spitting it out into the sink. Do not wash out the mouthwash with water, and refrain from chomping food or drinking for half an hour after rinsing with mouthwash.

A few people think that mouthwash is a shortcut to an entirely clean oral cavity, but that’s not the whole story. Even though using mouthwash can help you fortify your oral health, brushing two times per day and flossing once daily are still key habits central to any awesome oral hygiene routine.
